The Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship program strives to grant fellowships to women from underdeveloped and developing countries.
The Schlumberger Foundation is committed to gender equality in science and recognizes that full access to and participation in a STEM curriculum is vital for the empowerment of women and girls.
By promoting STEM research for women scientists in emerging countries, scientific and technological advancement will be expedited in the communities and places where selected candidates are awarded for this program.
Beginning in 2004, the Faculty for the Future initiative provides fellowships to women from developing and emerging nations to pursue Ph.D. or post-doctoral studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) areas at world-class universities.
Candidates must have applied to, been admitted to, or be currently enrolled at a foreign university while submitting their award application.
Candidates must have a solid academic record, have leadership ability, participate in community outreach activities, and have a track record of encouraging girls and women to pursue STEM careers.
Candidates must also demonstrate a willingness to return to their home countries after finishing their studies to contribute to the economic, social, and technological advancement of their home regions by strengthening their home institutions’ STEM teaching and research faculties, as well as through their leadership in science-based entrepreneurship.
They will also be required to contribute to the public sector, where their newly acquired technical and scientific abilities will help provide evidence-based support for STEM policymaking, including gender representation issues.
Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship Benefits
Since its inception in 2004, 807 women from 86 countries have been awarded Faculty for the Future grants to pursue Ph.D. and post-doctoral STEM research in renowned universities and research institutes outside of their native country.
Faculty for the Future grants are based on actual costs for eligible expenses (e.g., tuition, bench fees, housing, a living allowance, books and supplies, child care, transportation costs, medical insurance, visa costs, and conference costs) and can be renewed up to a maximum of USD 50,000 per year for a Ph.D. and USD 40,000 per year for a Postdoc. Renewal funding is contingent on supervisory recommendations and strong proof of reintegration plans in the home country.
An exceptional child care grant (per eligible child) may be awarded to a grantee at the discretion of the Schlumberger Foundation if the following conditions are met: the child or children are not older than 15 years of age (proof of age may be required); the child or children permanently reside in the same household as the grantee in the host country; and the grantee provides proof of reasonable and documented child-care costs.
(All daycare expenses must be supported by a written letter from the daycare center containing the child’s name and an estimate of monthly rates.)
The Foundation may give up to 3,000 USD per year per kid under the age of six and up to 1,500 USD per year per child between the ages of six and fifteen.
Any youngster who has attained the age of 16 will not be eligible for an exceptional child credit. In any grant year, the total childcare funding shall not exceed USD 10,000 per grantee.
